In this video Paul Pikel shows the simple but sound design of his bonsai benches.

Bonsai benches hold a lot of weight so it’s important you build something that’s going to last and can handle being watered on a daily basis. The benches must withstand the water without rotting and also maintaining their strength to hold multiple trees.

The benches shown here use treated lumber for 4×4 posts, which are dug into the ground about 3 feet. Then 2×4 supports are mounted with the posts sandwiched in between with a 9 inch bolt securing them. The length of the bench can be up to 16 feet and be able to hold a lot. Paul used 1x2s as the planking, which is a lot of extra work but he points out you can use a 1×4 or 2×4 instead.

Then bench is finished with a coat of outdoor paint or stain. The bench shown has been there for at least 7 years and has held up very well.
